Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between stress and coping methods of nursing students. Method: Data were collected by self-reported questionnaire from 207 nursing students in T college located in Daegu City from Apr. 7 to Apr. 11, 2003. Collected data were analyzed by using SPSS program.
Results: 1. The mean score of perceived stress was 2.11. The highest stress area among stress factors was nursing classroom stress(2.44). The mean score of coping methods was 2.36. 2. The levels of nursing classroom stress according to the general characteristics of subjects were significantly different at monthly family income(F=3.36, p=.011). The levels of other classroom stress were different at monthly family income(F=4.22, p=.003). The levels of college environment stress were significantly different at grade(F=2.43, p=.016) and monthly family income(F=2.90, p=.023). The levels of social/personal environment stress were significantly different at grade(F=2.33, p=.021) and monthly family income(F=3.02, p=.019).
3. The coping methods at nursing classroom according to the general characteristics of subjects were significantly different at age(F=3.70, p=.026). The coping methods at clinical experience were sex(t=-3.18, p=.002) and age(F=2.98, p=.053), the coping methods at other classroom were working experience in the health care field(t=3.08, p=.002). 4. The relationship between levels of stress and coping methods was positively correlated(r=.31, p=.000). Conclusion: Effective stress management program considering various influencing factors shall be developed to reduce stress.
